Freya Rhodes is from Kent and is of Anglo-Irish descent. She is an accomplished young vocalist; she also plays the piano, the flute and the Celtic harp. She is a music scholar at St. Lawrence College, Ramsgate. In November 2009 she won the title ‘Kent Festival Junior Pianist of the Year 2009/10’ together with five 1st places and the Pye Cup for her piano recital at the Kent Music Festival in Canterbury. On this occasion she was presented with a Canterbury Arts Council Bursary by the Sheriff of Canterbury, Gabrielle Davis.

Earlier in the year, Freya enjoyed a similar degree of success at the Thanet Music & Drama Festival, winning five 1st places and three cups for piano and vocal performances and the trophy for ‘Best Musician 2009’.

This was followed by an even greater degree of success at the next Thanet Music & Drama Festival when Freya won a total of ten 1st places, four cups, a bursary and the trophy for ‘Best Musician 2010’.

At this time Freya won all seven of the solo piano classes she entered. She was also placed first in the instrumental section playing the harp and came first twice in the vocal section. Earlier in the year she recorded composer Andrew Larner’s song ‘Serenity (the song of peace within me)’ at Canterbury Christ Church University, it was awarded first place in the Original Composition Class at the festival.

Incredibly, all this success was followed by an even greater accolade when Turner Contemporary event organisers invited Freya to perform as a solo artist at an event to celebrate the unveiling of Tracey Emin’s pink neon work ‘I Never Stopped Loving You’. At which time Freya was asked to entertain more than a hundred guests at a reception, singing and playing the piano, flute and harp. The guest list for this prestigious event included guest of honour Tracey Emin, Sir. Peter Maxwell Davies, Master of the Queen’s Music and other luminaries.

William Fong, renowned international pianist and professor at the Royal Academy of Music and Head of Keyboard at the Purcell School, recently described Freya’s performances as ‘vivid, sensitive, graceful and lyrical’, saying that she has ‘a great future’ as a pianist. Lora Dimitrova of the Guildhall School of Music says Freya is ‘born to play the piano’. Jazz impresario, David Mossman (Big Sky Jazz Festival & Vortex Jazz Club) described her as ‘a future star’ when introducing her to violin virtuoso, Nigel Kennedy and jazz pianist Nicky Yeoh. In the words of Classic FM presenter, Simon Bates; she is a ‘musical genius’. Freya is a member of the Kent County Junior Choir and Chamber Choir and the Broadstairs Childrens’ Choir and performs regularly at venues throughout Kent.
