INTERNATIONAL ARTIST TRACEY EMIN’S TURNER CONTEMPORARY EVENT: The launch of her pink neon work ‘I Never Stopped Loving You’!

Freya was delighted to be invited to perform at a prestigious Turner Contemporary event. Internationally acclaimed artist Tracey Emin returned to her home town of Margate to unveil her spectacular pink neon artwork ‘I Never Stopped Loving You’ currently displayed on the façade of Droit House; adjacent to the Turner Center. Prior to this she was the guest of honour at a fund-raising reception and dinner at the Walpole Bay Hotel in aid of the regeneration of Margate Old Town’s Creative Quarter through the Town Partnership.

Turner Contemporary event organisers invited Freya to perform as a solo artist at this event. In addition to Tracey Emin, guests included Alexander Thynn, the Marquess of Bath, Hamish McAlpine of Metro Tartan, Turner Centre Committee members and various other luminaries and local dignitaries.

During the reception Freya sang and played the piano, flute and harp, entertaining more than a hundred guests for an hour. Freya was thrilled to have the opportunity to perform at such a high profile event. She held her audience spellbound with her poignant rendition of ‘Over the Rainbow’; prompting Tracey Emin to remark ‘your voice has a beautiful, unusual, arty quality’.

Following Freya’s performance Tracey conducted an interactive discussion during which she told Freya ‘Always believe in yourself, even if no-one else believes in you. Believe in yourself and you will be successful. You don’t need anyone else; you have your music, just as I have my art!’

During her performance Freya invited another gifted young musician, Robert Evans, to join her. Robert accompanied Freya on the piano when they performed their award winning festival entries ‘Early One Morning’ and ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’ for which they won the trophy for the Vocal Solo With Piano Accompaniment (Under 16 Years) Class for two consecutive years at the Thanet Music & Drama Festival.

THANET MUSIC & DRAMA FESTIVAL 2010

Freya has been amazingly successful at this year’s Thanet Music & Drama Festival, winning a total of ten 1st places, four cups, a bursary and the trophy for ‘Best Musician’ for the second year running.

Freya won all seven of the solo piano classes she entered. She was also placed first in the instrumental section playing the harp and came first twice in the vocal section. Freya and Robert Evans won the trophy for the Vocal Solo With Piano Accompaniment (Under 16 years) Class for the second year running and she performed Andrew Larner’s ‘Serenity (the song of peace within me)’ which was awarded first place in the Original Composition Class.

The festival is a wonderful celebration of local talent in all areas of the arts. The Winners’ Concert was held at the Sarah Thorne Memorial Theatre, Hilderstone College, Broadstairs in March, at which time prizes were presented by Dr. Steven Ladyman MP.

THE AWARD WINNING SONG OF PEACE

In January Freya recorded ‘Serenity (the song of peace within me)’ at Canterbury Christ Church University. The song is an original composition by Andrew Larner, a lecturer at the university. A recording studio and sound engineer were provided for this venture courtesy of Andrew Gower, Director of Music (Broadstairs Campus). Freya was accompanied on the harp by Alex Rider, a post-graduate student at the university. The song was awarded first place in the Original Composition Class in the Vocal section of the Thanet Music & Drama Festival.

SACRED MUSIC

Last Autumn Freya embarked on a tour of Kentish churches, performing a selection of Sacred Music; her debut performance took place at St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church, Cliftonville. By co-incidence, this was on the feast day of St. Cecilia, patron saint of music and musicians. The parish priest, Father Eric Mead, has described Freya’s pure, clear voice as a ‘gift from God’. Freya received a warm reception from the congregation and has been invited to sing again in the near future. She will perform regularly at churches of all denominations throughout Kent during 2011.

KENT MUSIC FESTIVAL

As Kent Music Festival’s ‘Junior Pianist of the Year’ 2009/2010 Freya performed at the festival’s classical music concert which was held at the Dominican Priory, Canterbury on 4th July, 2010.

BROADSTAIRS FOOD FESTIVAL

In September Freya was delighted to be invited to perform at the Broadstairs Food Festival, this prestigious event was sponsored by Kent County Council, Broadstairs Town Council, Waitrose, Tesco, the National Farmers’ Union and celebrity chef Gary Rhodes. Freya’s repertoire of popular songs was enthusiastically received at this event; she also played a selection of pieces on the piano, harp and flute. Freya was joined by Robert Evans who gave a wonderful performance on the piano, saxophone and clarinet, the climax of this event being the beautifully atmospheric rendition of their award winning song ‘Early One Morning’ during which Freya’s soulful voice was supported by Robert’s faultless piano accompaniment, a fitting finale to the event. Following their performance, Freya and Robert were congratulated by the Mayor of Broadstairs, David Lawson and Clair Leach, a representative of KCC.

MAIDSTONE MUSIC FESTVAL

In November Freya entered the Maidstone Music Festival for the first time, winning a bronze medal for her piano performance and two gold medals for her harp performances.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT

In December, Freya participated in the popular Christmas concert presented by Jocelyn Emptage and Janet Evans at the Memorial Theatre, Hilderstone, Broadstairs, at which time she gave a vocal performance which was extremely well received, followed by performances on the piano and harp and concluded by playing the flute as part of the concert ensemble.

CLASSICAL MUSIC CONCERTS & OTHER EVENTS

2011 promises to be every bit as busy for Freya as she looks forward to performing a piano solo as part of the spring programme of classical music concerts at the Memorial Theatre, Hilderstone, Broadstairs alongside internationally renowned musicians Peter Fisher (violin) and Peter Hewitt (piano) who will play classical selections from Bach, Beethoven and Frank. Freya would like to express her appreciation of Jocelyn Emptage and theatre manager, Michael Wheatley-Ward for giving her so many opportunities to perform at the theatre on a program with musicians of this calibre.

In addition, Freya has been invited to perform at a forthcoming classical music fund-raising concert, organised by classical pianist and organist, Heinri Schnetler, an associate of Laura Sandys, Conservative Parliamentary Candidate for Thanet South. It is hoped that she will also perform at both Quex and Dreamland events later this year.

Freya has a wonderful repertoire of songs and instrumental pieces for piano, flute and harp. She is available to perform at the following events:
